Citizen Scientist Project in Google Classroom

Citizen Scientist Project

Choose one of the Zooniverse projects you tried last week. (Make sure it is a project classified as a science project, not history or something else.) This week you will spend more time with the project. Write a paragraph describing the project; include the project title, the organization or team behind the project, and the goal of the project.

After your paragraph, include the data you collect from the project (see the example report below). You should spend at least 20 minutes today and tomorrow collecting data to assist the project.

Finally, you should write a paragraph summarizing why you chose this project, how your work helped the world (what data you found), and reflect on what you feel about your experience.

Your final project will be due Thursday, May 28, at 2 pm. It will be worth a lab grade.

(I've attached a rubric to this assignment for you to refer to.)

Due:

Zooniverse III in Google Classroom

Zooniverse III

Today, I want you to use the pdf attached to this assignment to begin to explore the Zooniverse site. Your job is to follow the directions there and answer the questions on the handout. (You can do it with a Doc, print it out and write on it, whatever--just upload your answers before you turn this assignment in.)

Next week you'll be choosing one of these projects to take a deeper look at what it's doing, and either write up a report (on it on a Doc or handwritten), do a slideshow about it, or make a video about it. Keep that in mind as you explore the site.

Due:

Zooniverse II in Google Classroom

Zooniverse II

Today, I want you to use the pdf attached to this assignment to continue to explore the Zooniverse site. Your job is to follow the directions there and answer the questions on the handout. (You can do it with a Doc, print it out and write on it, whatever--just upload your answers before you turn this assignment in.)

Tomorrow I'm going to ask you to do the same thing with a different project on the site so that you get a feel for what the projects are like.

Due:

Zooniverse Project 1 in Google Classroom

Zooniverse Project 1

Many research projects scientists undertake involve the collection and analysis of data. Sometimes, it's LOTS of data, especially if you have images from a webcam or something like that to go through.

That is where the average citizen comes in. Citizen scientists can assist in these projects; one way we can do some science together that actually affects the real world is by using the website Zooniverse (see link below).

Today, I want you to use the pdf attached to this assignment to begin to explore the Zooniverse site. Your job is to follow the directions there and answer the questions on the handout. (You can do it with a Doc, print it out and write on it, whatever--just upload your answers before you turn this assignment in.)

Tomorrow (and Thursday) I'm going to ask you to do the same thing with a different project on the site so that you get a feel for what the projects are like.

Due:

Chapter 2 Test in Google Classroom

Chapter 2 Test

Please use your actual name. If you need to take this test more than once due to technical difficulties, email me to let me know what happened; otherwise, I will take your lowest score.

Good luck!

Due:

Mass vs. Weight Data Lab in Google Classroom

Mass vs. Weight Data Lab

Either print out, make a Doc to answer, or answer the questions on paper for the lab. You don't have to do the pre-write for the lab, but if you want to write it in your lab notebooks, that's fine.

Make sure you do the Data table and the Discussion and Conclusion sections.

(If you don't have a scale at home, estimate your weight.)

Don't forget to include units in your work!!!

Due:

2 Review (Kahoot) in Google Classroom

2 Review (Kahoot)

Play the Kahoot through at least once, then mark this assignment as done. (The Kahoot link should stay active until early Monday morning for extra practice.)

Due:

2.3 Quiz

Good luck!

Due:

Data Lab in Google Classroom

Data Lab

Turn to p. 115 in your book. Read the top part of the page, including both the example problems.

(Yes, this is math, and no, it's not algebra class, although it might look like it. You're plugging in the values given to the a=F/m equation for acceleration. Your book is giving you ways to find the mass and the net force without having to flip the equation around yourself.)

On a paper or in a Doc (if you can manage the equations OK), do problems 1 and 2 at the bottom of the page. SHOW ALL OF YOUR WORK. This is an incredibly short "lab", so double check and be sure you're getting all the points with a correct answer and each step of the equation. DON'T FORGET UNITS!!! (Remember that one quiz...)

(By the way, in #2, a "dragster" is a kind of race care.)

Attach your work and submit it. Have a good day.

Due:

2.3 Review in Google Classroom

2.3 Review

Turn to p. 114 in your book; answer questions #1, 3-8 on a paper or in a Doc. Upload/link your work and submit the assignment.

Answers will be posted in the class stream tomorrow; please use them to correct your mistakes and study.

Due:

Use the instructions on the Doc to finish your assignment. Don't forget to turn it in!

Due:

Introduction to Balanced Forces and Acceleration in Google Classroom

Introduction to Balanced Forces and Acceleration

Hey there.

Today we are going to start the next (and final) lesson for the chapter--we're taking a closer look at what happens when forces are unbalanced (surprise: things move), and revisiting an old friend: acceleration.

Spend today filling out your study guide for Chapter 2, Lesson 3. (It's the same study guide from last time--we're just moving to the next lesson.) You can print it out or use paper to copy what it says. I think a Google Doc would be hard to make to fill in all the information, so let's stick to paper for this one, unless you can make the pdf editable (there's a few tricks online for how to do it you can Google, but it's kind of clunky).

Either way, hang onto it, because you know I'm going to be changing and adding stuff as we read through the chapter!

Due:

2.2 Quiz in Google Classroom

2.2 Quiz

Good luck!

Due:

Identifying Forces Lab in Google Classroom

Identifying Forces Lab

Fill out the attached worksheet to identify which forces are acting on the objects shown. If you don't want to print the pdf, make a Doc or answer on a sheet of paper by numbering the pictures and labeling the forces with a description of the arrow--like:

#1. left arrow: [name the force]
right arrow: [name the force]

Due:

2.2 Review in Google Classroom

2.2 Review

Turn to p. 104 in your book and answer questions #2-7 in a Doc or on a piece of paper. Don't forget to upload a picture if you choose to do it on paper!

At 2:05, I'll post the answers in this class's Stream. Please use them to check your work and study for the quiz this coming Monday.

Due:

Identifying Forces on an Object in Google Classroom

Identifying Forces on an Object

Use the instructions on the Doc to finish your assignment. Don't forget to turn it in!

Due:

Elastic Forces in Google Classroom

Elastic Forces

Use the instructions on the Doc to finish your assignment. Don't forget to turn it in!

Due:

Friction in Google Classroom

Friction

Use the instructions on the Doc to finish your assignment. Don't forget to turn it in!

Due:

What Is Gravity? in Google Classroom

What Is Gravity?

(You'll find out pretty quickly if you trip.)

Seriously, though, read the directions on the Google Doc. Don't forget to turn in the assignment when you are done.

Due:

Introduction to Types of Forces in Google Classroom

Introduction to Types of Forces

If this feels like déja vu, you are kind of right--last lesson we started out with just an introduction to the idea of forces in physics; this lesson, we are discussing the different kinds of those forces.

Spend today filling out your study guide for Chapter 2, Lesson 2. You can print it out or use paper to copy what it says. I think a Google Doc would be hard to make to fill in all the information, so let's stick to paper for this one, unless you can make the pdf editable.

Either way, hang onto it, because you know I'm going to be changing and adding stuff as we read through the chapter!

Due:

2.1 Quiz in Google Classroom

2.1 Quiz

Use the form to take your quiz. I'm counting on your honesty. Good luck!

Due:

Newton’s Triple Play: Baseball Science in Google Classroom

Newton’s Triple Play: Baseball Science

OK, here we go trying something else out new. Let's see how this goes.

Today's assignment is a lab! I really wanted to let you guys do some kind of activity, so let's try it.

I've attached a link to a website that has an activity about Newton's 3 Laws of Motion (spoiler alert: there are 3). For this assignment, JUST DO THE FIRST LAW. (It's the only one we've learned about so far, after all.)

When you click the link, it might ask you to login with your Gmail school account. That's OK, you can link your account safely.

When it asks for your name, please put your actual first name. That way I know whose work I'm grading.

Follow the instructions and fill out the stuff the activity asks you to. Don't forget to save your work. If you're not sure if it saved, look at the folder on top of the screen called "My Work." If you ever have trouble seeing the "Submit" button, make your window really big. (I had to in order to see it.)

STOP YOUR WORK after page 5, the second review of Newton's 1st Law of Motion.

Turn in this assignment when you are done. I should be able to see your work through my account once you've finished. (Fingers crossed.)

Can't use the online stuff for whatever reason? Write your answers on a piece of paper and upload a picture.

Due:

2.1 Review in Google Classroom

2.1 Review

On a Doc or a piece of paper (don't forget to upload the picture if you do it by hand), answer the review on p. 94. Do #1, 3-8.

I'll post the answers for you to check at 2:05 after this assignment is due. Use them to study for the quiz Thursday.

Due:

How Do Forces Affect Motion? in Google Classroom

How Do Forces Affect Motion?

See the attached Google Doc for instructions.

Due:

Combining Forces in Google Classroom

Combining Forces

See the attached Google Doc for instructions.

Due:

What is a Force? (No, still not THAT Force) in Google Classroom

What is a Force? (No, still not THAT Force)

Read the attached Google Doc and follow the directions.

Due:

Introduction to Forces in Google Classroom

Introduction to Forces

Today we begin a new chapter in our lives. Literally. Chapter 2: Forces.

(No, not that kind of Force.)

Spend today filling out your study guide for Chapter 2, Lesson 1. You can print it out or use paper to copy what it says. I think a Google Doc would be hard to make to fill in all the information, so let's stick to paper for this one, unless you can make the pdf editable.

Either way, hang onto it, because you know I'm going to be changing and adding stuff as we read through the chapter!

Due:

Bill Nye: Motion in Google Classroom

Bill Nye: Motion

Because we have finished a chapter (yay), here's a video to watch. While you watch it, answer the questions in the PDF on a Google Doc or on a piece of paper. Just answer the first page; don't worry about the quiz on the second page. Don't forget to upload a picture of your answers if you do it on paper!

Due:

Chapter 1 Test in Google Classroom

Chapter 1 Test

Good luck. This is the first time I'm trying this; if you have trouble getting the test to start, you may have to get onto the Kahoot through the app.

PLEASE put your name as the Kahoot nickname so that I know who you are in the results.

IF THIS DOESN'T WORK for the class, don't panic. What I will do is convert the test into another format and post it tomorrow for everyone to take, and we'll ignore this version.

Remember your honor. I'm counting on you to be honest.
