I am attaching a pdf file with profile sheets for each of the guests at Soldier Island. Your job will be to complete the profiles, citing details, examples, and illustrations for each guest. You will have time to work on this, since there are a lot of people! Some, sadly, have already died...

I obtained this activity as a distance learning one, which should mean that you can use it as a Google Doc, but it does not look like it is that format to me. Therefore, you may either print the sheets out and complete them, or you may put answers to each sheet on a well-marked Google Doc, with one Doc per guest.

Hi, guys! After nearly 45 minutes on the phone with the guy from AT&T, we are still not sure when the technician will arrive at my house. It was supposed to be from 9:42-10:39, but no sign of him yet and no phone call. I am kind of stuck, so I think we will have to forego our read-aloud class today. This technician activity could extend into the afternoon, for all I know!

Therefore, read Chapter 10 on your own today, or create a Google Meet with a classmate and share reading and discussing. That would be awesome! Then work on your Guest Profiles. We will have our 9:45 read-aloud tomorrow!

This creative assignment allows you to think about what the Watson family needs after its ordeal in Birmingham. Consider each person and each person's interests, too, as you decide on a vacation destination. Once you have decided on a place for their family to visit, you will create a suitcase and pack it for ONE MEMBER OF THE WATSON FAMILY.

You may create your suitcase either literally (a real, but probably smaller suitcase-like object (or a real one, if you like!) or digitally, using all computer generated images in a program or programs of your choosing. You will need to figure out the programs on your own; you know I am not nearly as aware as you are of appropriate software! If you are making a literal suitcase, remember to use only objects that you have around the house. I do not want anyone spending money or going out during isolation time to obtain items!

Whichever way you create your suitcase, you will also write a one-page (approximately) letter from the person whose suitcase you are packing to another family member, explaining how the events in Birmingham affected him or her and why this particular vacation is so welcome.

See the written assignment attached below. This is a project grade and will be due a week after we return from Easter vacation. You DO NOT HAVE TO WORK ON THIS PROJECT OVER BREAK UNLESS YOU WANT TO DO SO.

As part of our study of the Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963, we will write a narrative essay (which tells a story) about our own families. Using Kenny's style and some of his language techniques, you will write a 2-page story about your own family. This essay will be due at the end of the week we return from Easter break, but you may begin thinking about it or even working on it IF YOU WISH TO DO SO over our Easter vacation. Please see the assignment write-up, attached below.

This article explains the process of bringing the bombers to justice. It is really interesting and also really shocking because it took so long. I think you will also find this article extremely interesting.

Please read it, taking notes as you go. Again, shoot for 5 items per section, or whatever you need to capture all the important information. Write your notes on a Google Doc, along with the title of the assignment (above) and your name and date.

Because you have a test tomorrow, I will make this assignment due on Thursday. It will be your last assignment due before Easter vacation.

We will have a test on the entire book. Please review it briefly. The questions will be varied and will include a short answer question.

Because many people are not able to open the videos I have attached before and view them, I am attaching links to material from the History Channel web site, that you can read. It is short and easy to read and understand. Please read the entire thing, which is shorter than you will first think.

Please take notes on this reading. For each subheading in the reading (in red ink), take at least 4 notes. Use a Google Doc and remember to title it, put your name on it, and the date.

To learn more about the racial issues that the Watsons encountered on their road trip and in Birmingham, do some research on the internet. Please choose appropriate sites that are good for kids. Please rely on sites that come from reputable places, like NatGeo, the Smithsonian, the History Channel, etc.

2. For each source, write the name of the web site and take notes on what you discover. You MAY USE bullet points.
3. Submit a Google Doc with your notes, along with you name, date, and assignment title.

Today, I would like you to reflect on what you think will happen in the future for the Watson family. Think about each of the five of them: Kenny, Byron, Joetta, Momma, and Daddy. Imagine it is 10 years in the future. What is each of them doing? Where is each person living? What kind of job or schooling are they involved in? How are they feeling? How have the events in Birmingham impacted their choices? What elements of their personalities are still the same and what elements are different?

Assignment--Write a paragraph describing each of the five people in ten years. Provide answers to as many of the questions above as you can. You may give more information, if you wish. Be sure the descriptions you give fit with the characters we know and love!
Use a Google Doc. You may turn it in on Monday, since you are receiving the assignment late on a short school day.

Paragraph 1--Write about any part of the chapter and its story of the Watson family that you can relate to with your own family. How are you similar to the Watsons? Be specific. If you have absolutely no similarities, say so, but I think you will be able to relate.
Paragraph 2--Write about how the Watsons react to seeing Grandma Sands. Were there any surprises? Does everyone behave in a way that fits them, given your knowledge of the characters? Any ideas about what might happen with Byron?
