Dear 5th Grade,
We have all been through SO MUCH this year. We not only had to to deal with a worldwide pandemic and anxieties that come along with adapting to a new normal, but, we have had to witness yet another horrific event in our nation- the death of an African American man named George Floyd. The world is suffering right now, and it is our duty to be informed.
I want to let you know that I AM WITH YOU, in this dark time, if you need me. I also want to remind you all that God loves us for who we are. He does not judge us all because of the color of our skin or gender, he sees each and every one of us as human beings.
And because of all that we have been dealing with, I have decided to drop the rest of your assignments for this week. There is too much anxiety and distress to complete assignments right now.
Instead, I will give you an opportunity for YOUR VOICE to be heard. YOU are OUR FUTURE generation and I think it is only fit for me as an educator to guide and help you in sharing your voices and stories. If you have no idea what I am talking about, please watch he video that explains Systematic Racism well.
Instead of completing your math assignment for today, you will have the opportunity to:
1. Make a positive protest sign in honor of he life of George Floyd and other figures who have died at the hands of police/official brutality OR
2. Write a poem/song/draw an image reflecting the inequalities you or your family might have encountered or have witnessed in regards to race relations in America OR
3. Complete any sort of creative piece that sheds light on a powerful message.
You can attach and submit your post here. Due Friday.
I love you all, and once again, I am here. I look forward to seeing the powerful stories you share. Please watch the Youtube video to become a little more informed in this cause.
With Peace and Love,
Ms. Diaz
